Hello Mike. I think I will call you that unless you wish otherwise. I sent your mother some money. It was not much but I felt compelled to do at least something. There is nothing that can take away the solemn pain that must be yours a product of betrayed dividends from a country, a society, and many a person whom you honorably pledged to defend if need be with your life. I am what many would call a history buff and this provides me with the benefit of a narrow and peculiar wisdom which is by definition history learned. This is certainly not to brag rather I see your story as a common one of betrayal. Carl von Clausewitz is often quoted to have said “War is the continuation of policy (politics) by other means.” Certainly this is no more evident than to yourself. War sadly occupies a strange place on earth where all persons engaged in its self indulging deed are proffered paradoxically both innocent and guilty at the same time. I believe wholeheartedly you are innocent of any wrong apropos war and its machinations. There are among us elitist groups who with a wink to Machiavellian principle unleash the dogs of war disliking the very outcome they sought out as a means to an end. They were staring into the abyss to find it was staring back at them. It is these groups that have imprisoned you and have over time continually served as the enemy within.

Traveled back to my old stomping grounds over Thanksgiving and decided to take the family out for brunch. I had intended on eating at the Gandy Dancer alas they are closed for lunch on Saturdays. You can never go wrong with the Gandy and hope to submit a review one day. Traveling on Main Street the very same Bob Seger would reminisce about a sign caught our eye. Café Felix? Hmm. I don’t remember that being here and having developed quite easily I might add a taste for French cooking we ventured in.

The menu had decent in size without being overwhelming. The food presentation was perfect and tasted wonderful. Ann Arbor is a college town whose heart is the University of Michigan. Named after the two wives of the land speculators both named Ann was incorporated in the 1820’s. Ann Arbor is made of all walks of life and offers a vast array of food choices. These competative conditions make for impressive menus and restaurants in the area. Cafe Felix competes quite well. Below is a sampling of the items we ordered. Read the rest of this entry »

Friday night. Date night.

19 June 2009

My beautiful wife decided we should savor one my favorite cuisines. She chose J. Betski’s Polish and German styled restaurant knowing that I have a soft spot for sausages. That soft spot is directly attributable to my larger soft spot. Sorry Honey, I do love the food.

          J. Betski’s is located in a trendy part of Raleigh surrounded by other restaurants and knick knack shops. The building is modern and has patio seating. This being June and North Carolina (and me from Michigan) I opted to dine in, avoiding the swelter. I don’t know how the Carolinians do it.

We were greeted at the door and were seated with a reservation for two at 6:00 pm. There is no booth seating and it is a small restaurant, presenting few tables. Parties greater than 8 would be difficult to seat. The floor plan is cozy but not the euphemistic version for cramped. The décor is simple, classy, and does well to set the tone for the evening. It has high ceilings and a hard floor which makes for a slightly noisy night. This is the norm at most restaurants nowadays. Betski’s sets its sights on 30 or 40 somethings with disposable income who are apt to seek out high energy dining experiences. I can’t blame them, having waited tables and witnessed the old timers coming in coupon in tow at 4:30 sharp ordering hot water to drink and splitting a lunch portion of poached salmon with no butter, salt, spices or flavor whilst complaining about price, service, and portion size knowing full well they will be back tomorrow and every day, same time, same meal, same complaint.
